Mexican Riviera

I feel like we started planning this months ago and now I'm sad that's it's over and done.  I actually had a hard time getting excited for our trip.  I was really stressed about leaving the kids and what if something happened to both John and I and the kids were left with no parents.  I know it sounds like this is the first time we have left the kids...and it isn't...that's why I wasn't sure why I was having a hard time leaving them.  It was for 9 days though and that was a long time to leave them.  I think I also felt a little guilty for dropping off 4 kids on my sisters doorstep as well.  I also didn't have much expectations for the cruise.  John and I had done 1 cruise about 5 years ago.  It was just a 3 day Baja cruise.  I think I had a little flu bug and just didn't feel good the whole time.  I thought that it may have been motion sickness but now I know I just wasn't feeling good. Also our only port was Ensanada.  Those of you who have been to Ensanada know that it is nothing to get to excited about.  The food was okay but I think that since I didn't feel good it really didn't taste good to me.  My last complaint was that it was cold.  Understand why my expectaions were low???  However, some of our friends had been before and really enjoyed it.  I know it is not the Caribbean but since we hadn't been to the Caribbean...we LOVED the cruise.  We were planning on leaving Saturday morning but there was a huge storm coming in.  All of our friends were flying down but since we had to drive the girls to Misti's house we figured we should just drive the rest of the way down.  We ended up leaving on Friday night instead and drove to Richfield.  We stayed the night with my sister and it was nice to help the girls get settled in.  The next morning we got the kids ready and my CRAZY sister took all 6 kids to the Home Depot craft.  (My next post will have all her pictures that she took.  The kids made me a scrapbook while I was away and I seriously think it is one of my favorite gifts I have ever recieved.  More to come later:) We helped load the kids into the truck and they drove off.  I was proud of myself because I stayed strong while waving goodbye and as soon as they were out of sight, I broke down.  John and I had a great time traveling just the 2 of us.  We took our time and stopped in Primm at the outlets and did some shopping.  I had high hopes to get some things for the cruise, but that wasn't the case.  We found a few things but nothing to exciting.  We listened to the hunger games and watched "The Help."  We got to our hotel in Victorville around 6 Saturday evening.  I didn't feel like going out so John went to Applebees to grab our dinner.  Neither of us were impressed with our food and I was worried that maybe our last cruise I was more homesick then flu sick.  I started to get a little worried that I was in for a LONG week.  We used facetime to call the girls and tell them good night and John told them a bed time story.  As soon as we got off facetime, I started to cry again.  I know John was thinking...my wife has lost it and I sure hope I don't have to deal with this all week ;)  We were supposed to be enjoying our break from the kids but I was having a hard time.  The next morning we got up and headed to Long Beach.  When I called the kids before they left for church I was doing good until Payge got on the phone.  She said, "I sad...I missa you."  That broke my heart and I couldn't even talk to her.  I had to hand the phone off to John.  I'm proud to say this was the LAST time that I cried.  The next 7 nights it almost became a chore to facetime them at the time I said I would.  I loved talking to them but I was glad I was no longer being homesick.  We got to the port around 11:00.  We had sticker shock as soon as we drove through the gate.It was going to cost us $130 to park at the port.  We had parked at the port last time but it must not have been as big of a deal since we had my parents and brother to help flip the bill.  We decided to go to the hotel where everyone else was staying and it ended up being only $42 to park there.  Thank heavens.  We waited at the hotel for everyone else to get back from church.  John and I were sad that we weren't able to go with them.  It was fast and testimony meeting and I think we missed out.  They told us that the members of the Bishopric have a stick with a sign on the end that says AMEN.  When some of the testimonies get out of hand or go to long, they get tapped with the stick.  We all got a good laugh out of that.  Once we got to the ship we hung out until we could get in our rooms.  The guys watch the playoff games on the big screen while the girls enjoyed the sun.  That night it was casual dress for dining.  For dinner I had tomatoe soup, a spicey sausage pasta, and the Chocolate lava melting cake.  I can't rember what John had but I do remember that his appetizer was Alligator.  Each night on the menu there was an item called DIDJA (did you ever want to try...)  John and JD enjoyed eating the disgusting items together.  That night a few couples ended up going to Karaoke.  It was very entertaining.  I have pictures at the end of this post that will tell a little more about the Karaoke scenes on the ship. The next day was a day at Sea.  We got up in the morning and went to breakfast.  We had a designated area on the ship that most people didn't either know about or were to lazy to walk up the stairs.  Either way it was a great place for us to meet in the mornings for breakfast.  Some mornings there were only 1 other couple and other mornings we were all there.  I think that is one of the things that we enjoyed the most.  Everyone felt like they could do what they wanted and didn't feel like we all had to stick together and all do the same thing.  After breakfast I found a nice place on the ship to layout and read.  Tyrrells and Silvas soon found us and we sat together and ate lunch and soaked up the sun.  It started to get a little chilly so we thought we would go sit in the hot tub.  The hot tubs were lukewarm and way over crowded. Bill and JD did enjoy their one on one time in the hot tub;) Since we still had time before we needed to get ready for dinner we decided to play some ping pong with the Austads and Harris's. We had some great competition's going on and before we knew it...we had to go get showered and ready for dinner. That night I had the Prime Rib. The prime rib was delish and it started my Steak Fest for the cruise. I had steak the rest of the time. I'm a pretty pick eater and some of the things were a little to fancy for me but the steak (all different kinds) was very very tender and flavorfull. That night after dinner we got our comfy clothes on and decided to meet by the ice cream machine. This quickly became on of our favoirte spots to hang out. I would be curious to see how many ice cream cones our group ate throughout the ship. I would dare say it was close to 200. We all loved them and they were the perfect midnight snack. That night we played Mafia. It was very entertaining and we had many laughs with the group. We also got lots of funny looks when we all had our heads down. We looked like we were all sitting in a circle praying. Our next day was our first day at port. We all met for breakfast and then tendered over to the marina. The Marina in Cabo is too small for the ship to come in so they have to take you in small ferries to the Marina. Once we got to the Marina we were bombarded with options. Everyone was yelling "Amigo, what you want to do?" The guys did a great job negotiating and we ended up with our friend Jose. He had a 15 passenger van and was our taxi for the day for $10 a person. What a deal!!! Jose was great and we were glad we went with him. We headed to Chileno Bay. On the way there we stopped by a small convienence store and bought drinks and snacks for our day at the beach. We had decided that our first day in Cabo we wanted to snorkel and just lay on the beach. We had about a 20 minute drive to Chileno Bay. When we first pulled up Jose showed us a little seculded beach that we could hike to if we wanted to do some skinny dippin. The funny thing was later on when we snorkeled around the rocks to the other side...We saw Jose sitting on that beach. Silly Jose hahaha. Anywho...we set up our camp and headed out to snorkel. We have quite a few funny stories for this day. We had already bought our own snorkel gear and the Harris's and the Austad's bought their gear from the same place we did. None of us were able to wear our fins because they were too small and tore the skin off the top of our feet. None of us used our fins the first time out. It wasn't until we came back and John was ticked that his fins hurt so bad and he was trying to see what the deal was with them. We all had a good laugh when we realized that we had left the shoe horn in the fins and that was why they were so uncomfortable. Snorkeling 101 remove the shoe horn from your fin :) Now I have to back up a minute to tell another story. When we first got in the water it was a little cold and chilly. It took your breath away for a minute. Jose had brought some noodles and I had no shame in floating on a noodle while trying to snorkel. John and I had never snorkeled before so this was new to both of us. It took me a minute to figure out the breathing because I was breathing fast and hard from trying to get used to the water. After a few minutes I got the hang of it and was enjoying the sights. The next thing I know I am by John and he is still struggling. For those of you who have ever been around John and cold water...he hates it. So he was also having a hard time getting the breathing down as well and he had swallowed ocean water a couple of times. I told him to take the noodle and relax and focus on his breathing. He finally got the hang of it but that was the joke for the rest of the snorkeling trip. John had to have his noodle each time he went out snorkeling. It's okay honey...I love you even with a noodle :)

After exploring the fish it was time to relax on the sand. Snorkeling was a little bit of a work out.

After we laid out for awhile, we decided it was time for all the girls to go snorkeling together. Jami and Elizabeth weren't quite sure if they wanted to do it but afterwards they were both glad we MADE them:)

Afterwards Jami was freezing and couldn't get warm. She provided us some entertainment.
Once we were done at the beach Jose took us back to the Marina. He did give us a pit stop at Walmart so we could use the bathroom and gather a few items we needed. Once we got back to the marina we did some shopping at the flea markets and then headed back to the ship. We had had such a good time playing ping pong the night before, so Austads grabbed the paddles again in hopes of playing some more pingpong. While we were waiting for dinner that night John and Bryan sat and had a warm up session.

Ping Pong was strictly business for John ;)
That night for dinner I had just the regular steak since nothing else sounded good on the menu. I think I also had a bean soup. That night didja was shark and of course John and JD had to try it. John didn't like it because he said it was 2 fishy but JD thought it was delish. I soon started getting the same dessert every night as well. The chocolate lava melting cake with Butter Pecan ice cream. It was the perfect treat.

That night Stacie and Bryan felt like bustin a move with the waiters.

Most of the nights we would go to dinner at 8:15 go to the late night show at 10:30 and then get together and play games. We played a variety of Mafia, Signs, farkle, phase 10, I've never, and even had some karaoke nights. One of the nights Bryan tried out for Garth Brooks and didn't get it. He was not about to not have a part in the Finale show so he tried out for Elvis and stole the part. Little did he know he would spend the rest of his vacation preparing for his part in the show the last night of the cruise.
We loved the animals we would get on our bed each night. I think each night we would say "ohhh...the girls would love this."
Our 3rd day is supposed to be a day at Mazatlan but they have security issues going on right now and so we spent another day in Cabo. Cabo was our favorite anyway so we were glad we were able to spend 2 days there. When we got to the marina we already had a guy from the previous day that we decided to use. We did see Jose and he even brought our cooler to us from the previous day. We all tipped him again because he was such a great host. The Bringhursts stayed back on the ship this day while the rest of us went on a "Tour" in a "Glass Bottom Boat" not quite sure what the hype is about the glass bottom boats. I had something totally different pictured in my mind and all it really was was 2 little boxes with glass in the bottom. I don't think anyone looked through there because we saw the fish much better by looking over the edge of the boat. Just an FYI for those who have high expactations for a glass bottom boat. Before dropping us on the beach our guide (who must not have been as good as Jose because I don't remember his name) gave us a quick tour of the beaches.
The Scooby Doo Rock
The window to the Pacific
The famous Arch on Lovers Beach
The famous stinky sea lions at Lover's Beach
Now John and I look like a cute little couple in this picture but really we had just had quite the little experience. As the guide pulled the "GLASS BOTTOM BOAT" to the shore we had to jump off into the water and waves. John was trying to help me out but right at the moment he tried to help me I pulled back because a wave came in and it made the boat go up a little higher. He thought I was jumping but I was trying to wait and I ended up falling off the boat and into the water. Yes, everyone had a good laugh at my expense and I was a little upset at John for a few minutes. It made a good memory for everyone else who was standing on the beach. We walked about 100 yrds across Lover's Beach to Divorce beach. This is a beach where the 2 bodies of water meet which cause some major under toe currents and large waves. They advised people not to swim at divorce beach. We had a good time sitting and watching people surf.

Bryan and Stacie Austad
Beau and Amber Harris
(however his room attendant liked to call him B-YOU)
JD and Amber Tyrrell
Tiffany and Sampson Rollins

Bill and Elizabeth Silva

I love this picture because even though I was a ways away I can tell exactly what is going on. Amber was looking at a bracelet that the guy was selling on the beach. You can see Beau in this picture and I can hear him in my head saying, "Oh Amber, you don't need to buy another bracelet from this guy"

The guys let the waves run over the feet while the girls camped out on the beach.

John and Bryan decided to dismiss the warning signs and go swimming. I guess they wanted to be able to say they went swimming at Divorce Beach. One of the waves got the best of John and sent him tumbling. It was very entertaining to watch.
This was the view from Divorce beach looking at Lover's Beach
Apparently these Signs don't include John and Bryan
We walked a ways down the beach to Pelican Beach.  The guys hit the water with their snorkeling gear and the girls set up for a relaxing afternoon in the sand.

Then all the guys decided to climb the cliff covered in white Sea Lion poop.
Bryan
Bryan again
Beau
JD
John
John Again
and again
Stacie couldn't decide if she wanted to try or not.  She soon realized this would be her one chance to ever climb a rock covered in poop...so she went for it!
After we left the beach we went to eat at Cabo Wabo.  This is a restaurant owned by Sammy Hagar.  We weren't sure if we would have time or not so we had to make it quick.  We were so glad we did.  Someone had recommended it to John.  It was by far the best Mexican food we have ever had.  We were sad we didn't eat there both days.  Maybe we can talk Sammy into building one a little closer ;)  I'll give him a call this week and let you know.
That night the show was Vegas Style dancers.  We thought it would be best to skip that one and instead we had a night of Farkle and Phase Ten...and lots of ice cream cones.
On Thursday we ported at Puerta Vallarta and headed to the zip lines.  The hispanic workers were very entertaining and kept us laughing the whole time.
I didn't know what they were doing.  I later figured out they were being funny but not until I sat there and they took my picture.  Instead of putting my helmet on over my handkerchief, they just left it covering my eyes. Good thing John helped me with that one.

They had a little restaurant at the bottom of the zip lines.  The food was good but not as good as Cabo Wabo.  However my mango margarita was outstanding.

Thursday night I had the filet minon.  I think this was my favorite steak that I had.  Soooooo GOOD.  Much better then the Escargo that John and JD had

Amber and Beau were the lucky 2 who got to dance with the waiters this night.
Stacie and Bryan must have had so much fun before....they had to do it again.  Thanks for making our table look good :)

We loved our Dining Staff.  Robert was our head waiter, Natalye and Rey were the assistant.

Friday and Saturday were days at sea.  They were much busier than expected.  We had many tournaments that we participated in like Ping Pong (John lost in the final round), basketball tournament, and a volleyball tournament.  It was mostly the guys that particapted but the girls sat there eating ice cream cones and cheering them on.  We also caught a session of bingo and the Newly Wed game.  One of my favorite things we did during these days was sitting on a lounge chair, baking in the sun, reading a book, and eating ice cream.  The best is when the guys would come check on us and then bring us a plate of food.  One day they even went to the chocolate fountain bar festival and brought us back a plate of treats.  Saturday morning we saw whales jumping completely out of the water.  We also saw a group of dolphins that were jumping back and forth behind the ship.  Saturday morning we had a mini golf tournament.  We decided that the losers had to go down the water slide for the punishment.

John and I took first place and Rollins brought up the rear.  However, they convieniently lost the score card to the deck below where we couldn't get it.  haha
Instead of going down the slide we just snapped a "LOSER" picture of them :)
While all the girls were soaking up the sun, the guys decided to have another mini golf tournament.  The losers had to sing at Karaoke that night.  So guess who the losers were... Bishop and Bill.  Bishop's goal was to do everyone's sign during the song.  He thinks he got them all.  Good job boys!!!

Here is the link to the Karaoke
Hey Hey we're the Monkies

After Karaoke we all went back to our rooms and got ready for our last dinner on the cruise.  Every night before dinner we would usually meet up in the lounge for the Family Friendly Comedy.  The first and 2nd nights of comedy were okay and the 2nd night was actually pretty funny.  I found myself laughing pretty hard at a few of the things.  The 3rd night was not worth going to and so we weren't sure if we wanted to go to the last night or not.  We figured it was a our last night and we might as well go.  The comedian started and it was bad...as in really boring and dumb.  Well the comedian knew that the show wasn't going well.  He had a few kids in the front row that would leave and then come back.  He started making jokes about them.  Another little boy sitting in the front row must have wanted the same attention.  He started stading up and down.  I think the combination of the show being a flop and this kid being disrespectful threw the comedian over the edge.  He went off on the kid.  He asked them to turn up the lights and he asked where the kids parents were.  No one claimed him and the comedian continued to yell at him saying, "Well you now have all the attention on you.  Are you happy now."  He continued to belittle the kid making a huge scene.  By this time the room was completely silent.  The comedian tried to continue his show but no one was making a peep.  People started to leave because they were so upset.  As soon as the show was over, Jami marched up to the kid who was 9.  By that time the parents were there and the kid was crying.  Jami was furious that he had been treated so unfairly.  She was also upset at the parents who didn't come get their kid but the parents thought it would have just made a bigger scene.  Anyway, we were all watching Jami and figured the show was over.  She hugged the boy and tried to make him feel better and then she turned around and we about died.  She was marching her way up to the comedian.  Oh my goodness...that girl has guts.  She continued to share her feelings with the comedian about how wrong he was to belittle a child like that in front of an audience.  By the time Jami left she was shaking and completely outraged by this comedian.  Oh Jami...thanks for the enterainment!

Like I have said many times before...we all loved the never ending ice cream cones!!!
The dining room on the ship was called the Gold Pearl Dining Room.  These were the dcecorations all along the ceiling.  We guessed that they are supposed to be pearls in a clam shell but we didn't think that was what it looked like.  Most of us agreed that it looked like fried eggs but Bill had his own ideas.  You can ask him yourself what he thought :)

Here are the famous frog legs that John thought tasted 'Just like chicken."

Once again Stacie got brave and decided to try the frog legs as well

 She was a little worried...

but agreed it tasted like Slimy Chicken.
Saturday night was the big night for Bryan.
My Prime Rib for the night.  Very Very Good :)
When we played signs, Amber's sign was sticking out her tongue.  During dinner, the topic came up that Amber has a sharp pointy tongue.  She continued to impress us by touching her nose with her tongue.  Beau is such a proud husband haha
After saying our Goodbye's to our Dining room crew we headed to the Spectacular Theater to cheer on Bryan AKA Elvis.

We just happened to have all of our "favorite people watching people" around us the last night.  John and Beau were lucky enough to snap a picture with Eric.  Eric was at every Karaoke event and sang atleast a couple songs.  I think he lives for Cruise Karaoke.  Needless to say he was not impressed with Bishop and Bill's act.  They were not serious about Karaoke and in Eric's world Cruise Karaoke means serious BUSINESS.  After the picture Eric gave Beau a big hug when Beau told him how much we enjoyed his songs :)  John was a little jealous.

John had to get a picture with this dancer.  She thought she was pretty special up on stage so John went and boosted her confidence even more by telling her she was the best one up there!!!

This lady earned the nickname "Ping Pong Lady"  we saw her everywhere once she played Stacie and Beau in the ping pong tournament.  She was serious business and was not about to let any rules bend while playing in the tournament.

Our group with Elvis flashing our Signs.
And who could forget Rod...the most hilarious Karaoke guy I have ever seen.  He also entertained us at most of the karaoke nights.
This lady earned the nickname "Wide Open Spaces"  this was a song she sang and lets just say I don't think she will ever do Karaoke again.
We had such a fun group of friends on the cruise with us.  It made the trip very memorable.
We did our last couple shots with our signs.

This was the last picture I took on the trip.  I thought it was a perfect ending picture that sums up our trip.  We all spent 1 on 1 time with our spouses, enjoyed the company of our friends, and ate lots of ice cream cones.  Can't wait for the next one.  Here are the memories that everyone shared from the trip.

Stacie Austad

So....just wanted to say thank you to everyone!! We had such an amazing week with you all. Bryan and I were saying how much we loved it and feel like our friendships have all deepened this week. And we loved all the laughs, holy cow our friends are FUNNY!! And a humongous thank you to silvas and tyrrells for letting us go on the flight ahead of you. Amber Tyrrell

Good times! We had a blast. :) Thanks Jami & Jared for lending us your Phase 10 cards at the airport. Who knew you could play that for 7 1/2 hours and still enjoy it!! Apparently our luggage is still on vacation...they never loaded it on the plane so its still in Long Beach. Guess they were a bit rushed on time :)

Anyway, thanks again- it was great! We'll have to start planning the next one! BTW, I have a nice picture of Jared in a Nacho Libre mask for this Sundays bulletin...

Tiffany Rollins

oh sad about your luggage Amber! When we got off the ship to get our luggage we were missing one. WE looked everywhere and couldn't find it. We were starting to get nervous. We finally found it in the taggless section. The tag had fallen off. Who knew! Glad everyone made it home safely. We also had a great time. I am interested to see how many lbs. you all gained! It is worth it, just saying! But curious still! :)

I don't know about everyone else but I am getting irritated with the swaying motion that I am still feeling!!! And I agree with Tiffany...I may be going to Maverick today to get my fix of ice cream. Amber...that stinks about your luggage. Do you have to drive back down to the airport today???? We for sure need to get together soon and share all of our pictures. Thanks again everyone for a much needed and wonderful week vacation. Can't wait til next time!!!

am so sorry to hear about your brother in law Amanda- that is heart breaking, is he Jon's sister's husband?

Are you taking the kids to the funeral and viewing? If you need help with the kids we would be moer than happy to let them come here!

We are planning on taking them with us. All of John's family from NC will be up there and we are just getting a hotel room. Yes it is John's oldest sister's husband. They have 4 boys ages 19 16 11 and 7. So sad :(

Amber Tyrell
Amanda- we just got back from Idaho with the kids. Not much snow, clear roads. We'll hope it stays that way for your trip up. Remember my parents aren't too far from I.F., so if you or your family need anything up that way I know they'd be happy to help. Love you guys!
